Helpful Tips
What is a serving of fruit or vegetable?

Kids
· Size of the palm of their hands

Adults
· A whole fruit (ie. apple) the size of a
tennis ball
· 1/2 cup of chopped fruit or vegetable
· 1 cup of raw, leafy greens
· 1/4 cup of dried fruits

What to buy?

· Buy fruits and vegetables that are in season locally.
· Frozen fruits and vegetables are always
available and a healthy choice.

Family Mealtime

· Take time to sit down and eat a meal
together, use this time to talk about everyone’s day and what’s happening.
· Involve your family with meal planning,
preparing and cooking.

Try it!
· Try the three bite rule - try at least 3 bites of any new fruit or vegetable. 
· Try to eat a variety of colors when it comes to fruits and vegetables.  Eat  a Rainbow. 

Add it!
· Add vegetables to foods your family
already likes.  Toss a handful of grated
zucchini into soups and pasta sauces.  Top pizza with peppers and broccoli.  Mix
onion and carrots with rice or grain.
· Add fruits to smoothies, yogurt, cereal, and other breakfast & snack foods. 
Berries (fresh and frozen) are easy, but sliced bananas, peaches, apples are also delicious.

Grab it!
· Wash and chop vegetables and fruits so they are ready to go and easy to eat.
· Try an apple for an afternoon snack - they really are the perfect “fast food.” 

Be a good role model for your family.
